Do you spend a good portion of your life chained to your desk, stuck in a cubicle, staring at a computer monitor or otherwise being inactive at your job? You’re not alone!

Many adult Americans spend a large percentage of their time at work.

Unfortunately, most of today’s jobs don’t offer much in the way of physical activity and as a result most of us are becoming less and less active.

According to the American Heart Association, inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease.

To help counter inactivity in the workplace, the Heart Association has declared April 8th National Start! Walking Day.

The idea behind National Start! Walking Day is that employees should bring their tennis shoes to work with them and spend at least 30 minutes walking throughout the day.

The hope is that by bringing the campaign into the workplace it will help to raise awareness of the importance of staying active as well as to encourage more people to participate in the Start! movement sponsored by the American Heart Association.

FYI, the Start! movement is a program that encourages people to exercise more and eat better, thus decreasing their risk for heart disease and allowing them to live longer, healthier lives. You can learn more here.

If you are interested in participating in National Start! Walking Day, be sure to talk to your boss or HR manager and have them download the toolkit for your office or workplace.

If you work at home like I do, take out your tennis shoes tomorrow and take a break to walk.

Not only is exercise good for your heart, but it also can help you be happier & more energetic, have better focus and concentration, sleep better plus a host of other benefits.

So why not jump on board and start walking? You’ll be glad you did.
